Lauwersoog

The lake with the best wind statistics in the Netherlands!

Kitesurfing is permitted at two locations in Lauwersoog: one on Lake Lauwersmeer and one on the Wadden Sea, both near the Hoek van de Bant. Both spots are less suitable for beginners due to varying depths, obstacles, and strong currents.

1. Lauwersmeer

Water depth varies from hip to shoulder height within 30 meters of the shore. Shallow areas are marked with wooden poles, but these are sometimes broken off. Tricky small waves can form with NE, E, and SE winds. There is space to set up on the grassy area beyond the parking lot. Preferably use the second inlet to enter the water, as it's calmer there.

2. Wadden Sea

Kitesurfing is possible directly behind the dike, with ample space. Beware: there are fences and potentially mussel beds that can damage your board or feet. Only kitesurf around high tide (2 hours before and after). Sometimes you have to walk a long way to find enough water. Guideline: a yellow buoy and poles to the right of the spot mark the safe area.

  • Attracts many spectators from the sea dike in good weather.
