Workum

Due to the shallow IJsselmeer, Workum is a breeding ground for many kite pros!

Workum is one of the best spots in Friesland, and even in Europe. Thanks to its location on the IJsselmeer and stable winds from westerly directions, it's a prime location for both beginners and advanced riders. Workum is ideal with winds from north to southwest. Easterly winds are offshore and therefore unsafe. In that case, we move to Kornwerderzand, Mirns, Lauwersoog, or the Wadden Islands.

The spot has a spacious grassy area and beach for setting up your kite. When it's busy, it's safer to launch in the water. It's shallow up to approximately 300 meters from shore, after which there's a sandbank. Nature reserves are marked with white/red signs. Pay attention to other water sports enthusiasts and keep the swimming area clear. The kite zone is indicated on the blue sign and accessible via campsite It Soal.

From June 1st to September 1st, only kitesurfing schools recognized by the municipality are allowed to give lessons. Free kitesurfing is permitted year-round.
